Mussoorie is a small hillstation, 38 Km from
Dehradun. Due to its pristine beauty and unspoilt environment, the
hillstation is termed as queen of hillstations. The hillstation is
situated on an altitude of 2000 mtrs. The view of gigantic Himalayas is
simply awesome from Mussoorie. Mussoorie promises an experience of
lifetime. Mussoorie is an excellent respite for tourists and people who

Mussoorie is situated 38 Km from Dehradun, capital
of Uttarakhand.
About Mussoorie
Mussoorie is also called as "Queen of Hillstations",
due to its enchanting beauty and mesmerising aura. The small town is
situated at 2500 M of altitude, and makes a perfect summer resort.
Mussoorie was founded by Captain Young of the British army, when he was
influenced by the beauty of this place and made his residence here. This
marked the foundation of a hill station called Mussoorie. The name,
Mussoorie, is derived from name of plant, 'Munsoor', which were found in
abundance here. After its discovery, this hill station gradually
developed as a center of education, business and tourism. Mussoorie is
an excellent respite for tourists and people who want relief from the
hot sultry conditions. Nature has gifted Musoorie everything which makes
a place beautiful.
35 km from Dehradun is Mussoorie, a fascinating
hill station commanding a wonderful view of the extensive Himalayan
range to the north-east and Doon Valley to the south. Mussoorie called
as the "Queen Of Hills", is one of the most popular summer destinations
of the northern hills.
Mussoorie was discovered by Captain Young, an
adventurous military officer in 1827. He was lured by the extraordinary
beautiful ridge and laid its foundation.
Getting There
Air
The Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, is 38 Km from
Mussoorie, from where one can easily get taxis and buses to Mussoorie.
Rail
The nearest railhead is Dehradun, which is well
connected to the major cities of Uttaranchal and the major cities of
India. Dehradun is a major railway station in the state. The taxi-stands
and bus-station outside the railway station provide 24 hours service to
Mussoorie.
Road
The extensive road network of Uttaranchal makes
Mussoorie conveniently connected to the major cities of state and
neighbouring states. Some of the major distances are: Barkot- 89 Km,
Dehradun- 35 Km, New Delhi- 290 Km, Hanuman Chatti- 129 Km, Nanital- 355
Km, Saharanpur- 110 Km, Srinagar (Garhwal)- 135 Km and Old Tehri- 76 Km.
Places of Attractions
Kempty Falls
The Kempty Falls are a major attractions of
Dehradun and Mussoorie. The falls are situated mid way between the
Dehradun-Mussoorie path. Set on the hilly terrains, the Kempty falls are
stunningly beautiful. The water cascading down from an altitude of 4,500
feet and splitting further into five cascades, the water falls from a
height of 40 feet giving the appearance of water jumping and playing on
the rocks before falling down. This place was developed as a tourist
destination by John Mekinan, after 1835. The name Kempty is derived from
'Camp-tea', as the Britishers would organise their tea parties here.Past
Kempty Fall, 12-km downhill, on crossing the Aglar River, one reaches
the legendary Yamuna River. Trout are in abundance here, and fishing
permits can be obtained form the Divisional Forest Officer, Mussoorie.
The Kempty waterfall is one of most beautiful falls
of Uttaranchal. The site is 15 Km from Mussoorie. It has a distinction
of being the biggest and prettiest waterfall located in a beautiful
valley, surrounded by high mountains.
Bhadraj Temple
Situated on the extreme western region of Mussoorie
town, this temple is dedicated to Lord Balbhadra, brother of Shri
Krishna. About 15 km from Mussoorie, Bhadraj offers a commanding view of
the Doon Valley and Chakrata ranges.
Surkhanda Devi
Situated at an elevation of 3,030 m above sea
level near village Kaddukhal, the temple of Surkanda Devi is about 40 km
from Mussoorie and 8 km from Dhanolti. Visitors can go up to Kaddu Khal
(Devas-thali) by bus or by car from where the temple is about 2 km on
foot.
Jwalaji Temple (Benog
Hill)
9 km to the west of Mussoorie and at an altitude of
2104 m is the Jwalaji temple. It is situated on the top of the Benog
Hill and has an idol of Mata Durga in it. The temple is surrounded by
the forests and offers a panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks, Doon
valley and Yamuna valley.
Nag Devta Temple
This ancient temple, situated on Cart Road is about
6 km from Mussoorie.
Parkasheshwar Temple
20 km from Mussoorie on Dehradun road. A famous
temple of Lord Shiva, is an ideal spot, on the road to Dehradun. It is
located in the modest of Hill Valley.
Gunhill
Gun Hill is one of the highest peaks of Mussoorie.
The hilltop offers a panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges namely
Bunderpunch, Srikantha, Pithwara and Gangotri Group. During British era,
a Gun mounted on this top was fired at mid-day to inform about the time
and ask people to adjust their watches. It can be reached by the Ropeway
ride whose distance is 400 M or by the bridle path which forks-off from
the Court, and takes about twenty minutes.
Municipal Garden
It is picnic spot having a beautiful garden and an
artificial mini lake with boating facility. It is located at a distance
of 3 Km from the Mall road.

Camel Back Road
This road begins from the Rink at Kulri Bazar and
terminates at Library Bazar, stretching over a distance of 3 Km. The
road is named after the Camel rock, which has a life like resemblance
with a camel's hump. Horse riding and walking during evening is a
memorable experience as it offers a scenic sunset view in the Himalayas.
Bhatta Falls
The Bhatta falls are 7 Km from Mussoorie on
Mussoorie-Dehradun road near Bhatta Village. The fall has different
ponds for bathing and water amusements and forms an ideal place for
picnic.
Sir George Everest House
The place called Park Estate, where building &
laboratory of first Surveyor General of India Sir George Everest is
housed. Worlds highest peak, Mt. Everest, is named after him. The place
provides an enchanting view of Doon Valley on one side and view of
Yamuna Valley & snow bound Himalayan ranges on the other.
Best Time to Visit
The enchanting natural beauty of Mussoorie is best
enjoyed during the summers, ie, March to June and Autumn months of
October and November.
